About this app
The Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) app from U.S. Customs and Border Protection allows Nationals of Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries to apply and pay for a travel authorization without a visa. The ESTA app is a mobile version of the ESTA application process and information that can also be found on the ESTA website at https://esta.cbp.dhs.gov.
The ESTA app currently has two features available: Apply for New Individual Application and Search for Existing Application.
• The “GET STARTED” feature allows travelers to create a new ESTA application, pay for the ESTA and submit the application to be processed by the system to determine if they are eligible to travel to the United States under the Visa Waiver Program without a visa. The system will provide the traveler with an automated response.
• The “FIND IT” feature allows travelers to check the status of their existing ESTA application..
CBP recommends that you apply for ESTA at the time you book your travel, but no less than 72 hours prior to boarding.

Could be better...as with all on line application forms, there are areas of doubt as the question is not clear. why can't these forms ever understand mobile phone numbers? They all seem to have own acceptance methods required! I had to redo it because it did not save whilst I looked for family contact details! Save automatically please! I like the form but needs to be tightened up to give clarity on what it is looking for in some cases. We are in the UK...why is the UK last in drop down menu?

Frustrating fail to read a passport. First off the instructions are obtuse. They say to put the phone on the passport, but the illustration shows motion like they're taking a picture or a video. it is n f c and I finally succeeded by laying the phone on the inside front cover of my passport. but then I couldn't select US as the issue.Or there is no pull down empty list to check from

App failed, not allowing me to enter "issuing nation" data in the field. There was an entry field with a drop-down but no keyboard or list. Only option was to back out, loosing my previous work. Wasted time. "Save and exit" doesn't even work without the "required information " so I can't reopen the form on my PC.
